Steel Belt Dryers & Roasters

Dryers

Dry Nut RoasterDryers (or driers) are used to extract moisture from materials, whether textiles, food or slurries. Dry roasting applies heat without using oil or water, stirring the materials to ensure even heating. This is typically carried out on nuts and seeds, coffee beans, spices, cocoa beans and tea leaves. Dry roasting changes the chemistry of proteins in food resulting in an enhanced flavor and scent. This can be done in a specialised roaster, especially in industrial settings, or at home in a frying pan or wok.

One common example of a drier is a clothes drier. The first version of the tumble dryer was created by Pochon in 1799, consisting of a metal drum with holes in it hand-cranked over a fire. An improved and patented version was designed by George T. Simpson in 1892, but the fist electric clothes driers were designed around 1915. The basic concept involves drawing in dry air, heating it, passing it through the tumbler, then venting the hot and humid air outside. It consists of a lint screen through which the air is drawn through, a fan, rotating tumbler that holds the clothes, a heater, an exhaust vent, temperature shut-off switches and controls.
