What is engineering? Engineering is a discipline that applies scientific and mathematical principles to the design, construction and maintenance of structures, machines, processes and systems. These machines or processes must safety realise a desired objective efficiently and economically. The American Engineers’ Council for Professional Development adds that it is the creative application of scientific principles in designing and developing these systems, understanding how these systems work singly or in combination, and the forecasting of their behaviour under specific operating conditions.
There are several branches of engineering, sub-categories broken down into specific areas that engineers’ can specialise in. These include aerospace engineering, chemical engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering and mechanical engineering. Aerospace relates to the design of aircraft and spacecraft, and chemical engineering refers to the exploitation of chemical principles to design new materials and process chemicals. Civil engineering covers the design and construction of both public and private works, from bridges, to roads, tunnels, railways, water supply systems and buildings. Electrical engineering relates to the design and implementation of electrical systems, including electronic goods. Finally, mechanical engineering involves the design of mechanical systems, such as engines.
