Engineering

Engineering, the discipline and profession of applying technical, scientific and mathematical principles to realise commercial or other objectives, is used in many areas of life. From the roads we drive on, the cars we drive in, the phones we talk on, the MP3 players we listen to, or the houses we live in- engineering is a widely applicable discipline involving the design, construction, manufacture, and implementation of various machines, structures, systems, devices and processes. In fact, it is so broad that there are several different sub-disciplines within the profession of engineering.

The traditional branches of engineering are broken down into chemical, aerospace, civil, electrical and mechanical engineering. What is engineering? Engineering is a discipline that applies scientific and mathematical principles to the design, construction and maintenance of structures, machines, processes and systems. These machines or processes must safety realise a desired objective efficiently and economically. The American Engineers’ Council for Professional Development adds that it is the creative application of scientific principles in designing and developing these systems, understanding how these systems work singly or in combination, and the forecasting of their behaviour under specific operating conditions.
